Does anyone know of any (inexpensive) modelers capable of generating
hierarchical, texture mapped, polygonal and maybe even articulated
objects for import to Performer?

If so, do you have a phone number or company name/location so
that I may contact them?

I am familiar with Multigen, but am looking for other less-expensive
alternatives.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Have you heard/thought about ModelGen? It is the lower cost modeling
option. I do not know the specifics, but I think the lesser used
options such as Dfad/Dted and a few others are omitted.

The lowest cost modeler is i3dm, which is free and ships with
IRIS Performer 1.2 in the "Friends of Performer" section of the CD.
If it does what you need, the price will certainly be low enough.

We know of many modeling tools that can be used with IRIS Performer.
Some of the advanced ones, such as MultiGen from Software Systems,
have lower-cost Junior versions that may meet your needs. Here is a
list of tools.

People have also used the TDI Explore modeler, have used
SOGITEC's SINDBAD, have used Symbolics S-Model, have
use the S1000 database generation system, and I have been
told, a new modeler (named "medit" ?) that works well with
IRIS Performer and is in popular use in Europe.

Note modeling tool vendors: If you're not on my list, please
email me at mtj@sgi.com and you'll appear the next time this
question is asked.

Medit Productions S.A. in Valencia have written a neat little 3D modelling tool
( it does heirarchy, LODs, textures etc..), which I have a version of on my own
machine. We used it to design the new RealityCentre in Silicon Graphics UK as
you can drop the files into both Performer & Inventor.

If you would like to try it, ( and see our model of the RealityCentre to boot!
) take a copy of...

guest@death.reading.sgi.com:/anarchy/RC_Export/Medit ( 27 Mb )

...there are no restrictions on copying it because you need a licence to save
anything but I think they will give a demo licence to each Silicon Graphics
office as a cheap marketing ploy.

Re: Medit modeller.

We seem to have caused a bit of a fuss with our modelling software.
If anybody is interested in getting a demo tape, or would like
more details, please fax your company details to us at

Coryphaeus Software Inc, Los Gatos, CA, produces the only integrated suite of
VisSim Tools in the industry. Our main products are...

    o Designer's Workbench (DWB)
      This is a 3D vis-sim modeler & real-time animation package. As a taster
it it a mixed-model Motif/Glx app with virtual sphere manipulation of the
model and includes materials, texture mapping, hierarchical structure
display with "drag & drop" editing, Node attribute pages,
LODS, light points, animation sequences & a *PUBLIC DOMAIN* database
format that matches Performer's in-memory structures very well.
DWB also has an option for attributing behaviour to any Node in the
database. These links will transfer across to any Performer app
seamlessly. A DWB performer loader is available in source along with a
Performer Writer (write out any Performer tree as a DWB file). It is
modern object-oriented software, fully featured & inexpensive.

    o Easy Terrain (EZT)
Stand alone terrain modeling package. Convert DMA DTED & DFAD, USGS DLG &
DEMs. Build terrain databases from scratch using fractal, regular grids -
      modify with adaptive delanauy etc.etc.

    o EasyScene
Performer based IG rendering software. Load DWB (or any format files
supported by Performer). Set eye points, weather, full object scripting
capabilities, comms interfaces, all done without any programming - edit
a simple text file to set up & run your simulation. Used as the IG engine
for a just-delivered 4 channel driving simulator to the Transport
Accident
      Commission of Victoria, Australia.

I am Product manager for DWB & EZT. For technical info call/email me. For
pricing sales info call Bill Oliver, Director of sales & marketing. numbers..

Hi,

Does anyone know about Medit, a pretty nice and cheap modeller that
runs on Sgi ?
Thanks for your comments.

Chantal Durand of INRETS in France asked about Medit the low cost database
modeling software. Myself and a few colleagues around Europe have been aware of
this software for some time although it is not yet released as a product.
I think version 1.0 will be generally available in a couple of months. I have
an early release ( version 0.95 ) which I have been evaluating and it looks
like it will be a very useful tool for database modeling for Performer (there
is a Performer loader) or Inventor.

If anyone is interested they should write or send a fax to...

Plaza Jose Maria Orense 12, Pta. 5
	46022 Valencia
	SPAIN

... for a demo copy ( you don't need a license unless you want to save stuff )
